James J. Maher

James J. Maher, 90, a longtime resident of Red Hook, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at the Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, NY, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on October 26, 1927 in Mamaroneck, NY, he was the son of the late James J. and Mary Ann (Cullen) Maher. James married Dorothy Wright on July 3, 1949 at Holy Trinity Church in Mamaroneck, NY. Dorothy predeceased him on September 14, 2007.

James proudly served in the United States Marine Corp immediately after the end of World War II. He enjoyed sharing many stories of his experiences while serving his country in China and the South Pacific.

James obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from Fordham University in 1952, and thereafter obtained his New York State pharmacy license. For many years, he was the owner of the Red Hook Drug Store in Red Hook, NY.

James was a communicant of St. Christopher's Church in Red Hook.

He is survived by his loving family, including his children; James E. Maher of Saranac Lake, NY, Susan Maher (William Holland) of Rhinebeck, NY, Sheila Cataquet (Jim) of Rhinebeck, NY, and Stephen J. Maher (Barbara Sanchez) of Plattsburgh, NY; his grandchildren, Melissa Smith, Matthew Peppe, Christopher Peppe, Jessica McAllister, Ashley Cataquet and James Cataquet; his great-grandchildren, Olivia Smith, Ty Smith, and Casper McAllister; along with extended family and friends.

His sister, Josephine Maher, predeceased him.

James was an avid walker and enjoyed spending time outdoors taking long walks well into his later years. He also enjoyed spending summers at his summer residence in Port Douglas, NY, boating and fishing, and sharing time with his family on Lake Champlain. He was an avid reader and was well known for his sense of humor and quick wit.

Calling hours will be private.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, February 17th, 2018 at St. Christopher's Church, Red Hook, NY. Burial will be at Viewmont Rural Cemetery, Clermont.

Memorial donations may be made in James' memory to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
