Obituary of Victor D'Ortona
Victor D'Ortona Sr., age 97, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2019 while residing at the Baptist Home at Arbor Ridge in Rhinebeck, NY
Victor was born on Feb. 13, 1922 to Silvio and Philomena (nee Inio) D'Ortona. He was born and grew up in Buffalo, NY where he lived with his large family, helped his father with family businesses and pursued the sports of baseball and boxing.
At age 21, he joined the Army Air Forces, determined to become a pilot despite his lack of a high school diploma. He accomplished his goal and piloted a B-17 on 35 combat missions over strategic targets in Germany and France. Victor's military honors include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with five clusters, and four Battle Stars on European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre ribbons. When he left the cockpit, he continued his military service as Motor Transport Officer, supervising the Base Motor Pool at McDill Field, FL
On April 27, 1944 he married Emelia Daisy Miolla (Daisy) from Mt. Vernon, NY. They just celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary! Upon separation from the service in Sept. of 1945, they lived in the Bronx, Mt. Vernon and Hawthorne, NY. Victor became a jeweler's apprentice in his brother-in-law's store and eventually opened his own business. He loved helping people find the diamond of their dreams!
Victor is survived by his wife, Daisy, four children; Linda Johnston (Tom) of Lawrenceville, GA; Donna Dortona of LaGrange, NY; Victor Dortona (Christine) of Hampton Bays, NY; and Phyllis DiLapi of Westbury, NY.; six grandchildren, James (Lisa) Ferrante, Michael (Robin) Ferrante, Susanna (Eric) Johnson, Tommy Johnston, Jeffrey (Lauren) Dortona, Benjamin Dortona; and nine great grandchildren, James, Christina, Bianca, Michael, Asher, Emaline, Isla, Cameron, and Emmie.
He is predeceased by his parents and siblings, Anthony, Johnny, Jimmy, Louis, Joe, Carmen and Mary.
