Joan Haege

Obituary of Joan C. Haege

Joan C. Haege, 89, a resident of Red Hook passed away on April 18, 2020, at home surrounded by her family. Born on November 12, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Lovett) Sweeney. Joan held many different clerical jobs until she found the job she said was her favorite; being the wife of Edmund Haege, whom she married on February 11, 1961, and mother to their three children. When the children were young, they moved to Brewster, New York, where they raised their family. Eventually they retired in Red Hook, New York, where Joan was a communicant of St. Christopher's Church. Joan loved caring for her family. She celebrated holidays and birthdays with enthusiasm, and was well known to be the family historian recalling events in great detail. She enjoyed knitting sweaters and crocheting afghans, some of which won blue ribbons at the Dutchess County Fair. Throughout her life, Joan was generous to all. In recent years, Joan was housebound, but enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends by phone, and watching Hallmark movies. She also viewed the daily Mass on EWTN and was known as a powerhouse of prayer for anyone in need. Joan is survived by her loving children, Edmund (Lorna) Haege of Hopewell Junction, New York, Maureen Haege of Red Hook, New York, and Kenneth (Claudine) Haege of Wingdale, New York; her grandchildren, Rylee, Raegan, Kenneth, and Peyton; her sister, Bernadette (Vincent) Napodano; several nieces and nephews, and a long-time friend, Ruth Andreasen, whom Joan considered to be another sister. In addition to her husband, her sisters Mary Clare, Veronica, Josephine, and Patricia; her brother Joseph; and her grandson Kenneth (preborn death due to miscarriage), predeceased Joan. Due to current restrictions, services will be private. Interment will be at St. Lawrence O'Toole Cemetery, Brewster, New York. Memorials donations may be made in Joan's memory to EWTN, 5817 Old Leeds Road, Irondale, AL 35210. Arrangements are under the direction of Burnett & White Funeral Homes 7461 S. Broadway, Red Hook, NY.
