Dorothy R. Wengler, 88, of Red Hook, NY, passed away on Sunday, December 20th, 2020 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Born on May 21, 1932, in Queens, NY, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Kaelin. Dorothy married Leonard Wengler on September 29, 1951 at St. Boniface R.C. Church in Elmont, NY. Leonard predeceased her on August 4, 1998 after 47 years of marriage.
Dorothy often said that her life began when she met her husband, Leonard. Together they raised 5 beautiful children, all who would go on to have families of their own. Dorothy's family grew to include 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Dorothy's greatest joy was to be surrounded by her family. She was always able to make each member of her family feel special and loved.
In addition to raising her family, Dorothy worked as a cake decorator in Hudson, NY and later as a florist in Germantown, NY. Family gatherings were always blessed with a cake made by Dorothy for every occasion.
To all who knew her, Dorothy was an active person always willing to lend a hand. She was both a communicant of St. Christopher's Church in Red Hook, NY and a volunteer with their food pantry.
Dorothy was an avid volunteer at Northern Dutchess Hospital Gift Shop for many years. She was also a member of AARP and the Red Hook & Southern Tier Seniors. Dorothy enjoyed playing Mahjong at the Starr Library in Rhinebeck, NY with her daughter-in-law Mary Kay. Every Monday afternoon she could be found playing cards with her close friends.
When she was not volunteering or playing cards, Dorothy could be found traveling the world – she truly took advantage of planes, trains and automobiles. Whether it be cruising the Caribbean or exploring Europe, she made an adventure out of life and enjoyed every moment.
She is survived by her loving children, Beth (Patrick) Ehlen of Murrells Inlet, SC, Leonard (Karin) Wengler of Palm City ,FL, Kenneth (Mary Kay) Wengler of Kinderhook, NY, Joanne (Matthew) Renneman of Red Hook, NY, and Thomas (Patricia) Wengler of Middlebury, CT; fifteen cherished grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; along with extended family and friends.
