Obituary of Carroll A. Houghton

Carroll A. "Sandy" Houghton, 70, was a longtime resident of Rhinebeck, NY, passed away on Friday, December 18, 2020. Born on September 1, 1950, in Hartford, CT, he was the son of the late Maxwell Albert and Marion Elizabeth (Chamberlin) Houghton.

He attended Rhinebeck Central School where he was taught the trade of Auto Body repair through the Dutchess Boces program. Immediately following high school, he enlisted in the Navy. He served on the USS DESOTO County Landing Ship (LST-1171) from 1969 to 1971 as a Gunners Mate. When he returned to Rhinebeck he secured a job with Rikert's Auto Body where there he continued to use the knowledge he attainted through Boces. In 1977, he opened his own shopped called Happy Days Body and Paint in Red Hook, NY where until recently, locals would have seen his restored green and white 1956 Chevy parked out front. He was also a member of the Chevy Classic Club.

He was the lead singer of Sandy and the Rhythm Cruisers. They played old style rock and roll for many venues throughout the Hudson Valley. They also played on Thursday nights at Montgomery Street Bar in Rhinebeck where they organized a dance contest. It was a hopping time and all wanted to win the trophy for best dancer. The trophy was made by Sandy out of an old car rear view mirror with dice handing from it.

Sandy married Lorraine Adesso on January 27, 1973 in Long Island, NY, and Lorraine survives at home in Rhinebeck. He is also survived by a half-sister, Gail (Butch) Kennison of Northfield, VT; his aunt, Carolyn Caswell of E. Hartford, CT; a cousin, Lee (Sylvia) Houghton of Lydonville, VT; his in laws, Margaret (Brian) Croghan of Pine Plains, NY, Patricia Adesso of Poughkeepsie, NY, and Matteo (Helen) Adesso of Ravena, NY; along with extended family and friends.
