Obituary of John "Jack" J. Gilfeather
John J. "Jack" Gilfeather, 89, a longtime resident of Red Hook, NY, passed away on Monday, July 12, 2021 at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, NY.
Born on July 25, 1931, in Albany, NY, he was the son of the late Francis and Helen (Quirk) Gilfeather. Jack earned his bachelor's degree at Harpur College – which is now SUNY Binghamton. He served in the US Marines Reserves during college, enlisted in the US Army, and served in the Korean War from 1954-1956.
Jack married Ann Harrison on June 23, 1957 at Good Shepherd Church in Rhinebeck, and she survives at home in Red Hook.
In 1956, he began his career with IBM as Senior Systems Analyst based in Kingston and Poughkeepsie, NY. He was a member of their ¼-Century Club.
Always active in his community, Jack was a longtime communicant of St. Christopher's Church in Red Hook; he was a longtime coach and supporter of Red Hook Little League; a tenured member of the Red Hook Golf Club and active participant of the Tuesday night Supper Club.
Jack served in many elected positions in Red Hook. For 10 years, he was a Trustee for the Village of Red Hook; was on the school board for 6 years, including President of the Board and then he served as the Supervisor for the Town of Red Hook for 16 years. During his distinguished tenure as Red Hook Town Supervisor, Jack also served on the Executive Committee of the Association of Towns of the State of New York, including as its President. He was also a founding and longtime member of two statewide insurance pools for local government, the New York Municipal Insurance Reciprocal and Workers Compensation Alliance which together now protect over 1200 NYS local governments with property, casualty and workers compensation insurance.
In addition to his loving wife of 64 years, Jack is survived by his children, Michael Gilfeather of Goshen, NY, Kevin (Lisa) Gilfeather of Kingston, NY, and Kathleen (Robert) Gallucci of Fairfield, CT; his loving grandchildren, Dana Gilfeather, Lindsay Gilfeather, Bridget Gilfeather, Erin (Ryan) Losonsky, Steven (Andrea) Gilfeather, Daniel Gilfeather, Amanda Gallucci, and Elizabeth Gallucci; his great grandsons, Jack, and Connor ; along with extended family, and numerous friends and colleagues.
His brother, Frank Gilfeather predeceased him.
Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes in Red Hook on Sunday, July 25th, 2021 from 3 to 6 pm. Prayers will be offered at 5:30 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Monday, July 26, 2021 at St. Christopher's Church, Red Hook, NY. Interment will follow at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Red Hook.
